Rizvi's Stellar Performance Secures Victory for Delhi Capitals Over Mumbai Indians

Rizvi's 90 Powers DC to Victory

In a thrilling match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi, Sameer Rizvi's impressive innings of 90 runs propelled the Delhi Capitals (DC) to a six-wicket victory against the Mumbai Indians (MI) during the eighth match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.

This win marks only the second time in seven encounters that DC has triumphed over MI. Additionally, it is DC's second victory in six home games since 2025, with their previous win coming in a Super Over against the Rajasthan Royals.

Chasing a target of 163 runs, the Axar Patel-led team faced early setbacks as Deepak Chahar dismissed KL Rahul in the first over. Rahul managed just one run before being caught behind by Ryan Rickelton, marking the first time Chahar has taken Rahul's wicket in IPL history.

Nitish Rana, who came in at number three, was quickly run out by Jasprit Bumrah's direct hit after attempting a risky single.

Pathum Nissanka then shifted the momentum, forming a crucial 66-run partnership with Rizvi for the third wicket, scoring 44 runs off 30 balls with seven boundaries.

Following Nissanka's dismissal, Rizvi took control of the innings, contributing significantly to a 78-run partnership with David Miller, where he scored over 60 runs.

Rizvi's Record-Breaking Knock

The 22-year-old Rizvi achieved his second half-century of the season and continued to hit boundaries, finishing with 90 runs off just 51 balls, including seven fours and as many sixes. He now leads the Orange Cap race with a total of 160 runs in two innings this IPL season.

Rizvi's score of 90 is the second-highest by an impact player in IPL history, trailing only Jos Buttler's 107* against KKR in 2024. Furthermore, it ranks as the third-highest score by a DC player against MI, following Virender Sehwag's 95 not out in 2013 and Jason Roy's 91 not out in 2018. His seven sixes are also tied for the most by a DC player against MI, matching Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs.

Miller sealed the victory with a boundary on the first ball of the 19th over, marking DC's second win of the season while MI faced their first defeat. Rizvi was awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, marking his second consecutive impactful innings and second Player of the Match award in IPL 2026.

Suryakumar's Half-Century Lifts MI to 162

Earlier in the match, DC won the toss and opted to field first. Suryakumar Yadav captained MI in the absence of regular captain Hardik Pandya, who was unwell.

The opening pair of Rickelton and Rohit Sharma started strong, accumulating several boundaries in the initial overs. However, Mukesh Kumar's second over changed the game, as he dismissed Rickelton and Tilak Varma with a caught and bowled dismissal.

This over halted MI's scoring momentum, forcing Suryakumar and Rohit to be more cautious. The duo managed to add 53 runs for the third wicket in 40 balls.

Axar Patel claimed Rohit Sharma's wicket in the 10th over, with Sharma scoring 35 runs off 26 balls.

Sherfane Rutherford also fell short, getting out in the 12th over after Mukesh Kumar took a spectacular catch off Vipraj Nigam's bowling, contributing only five runs.

Suryakumar Yadav reached his half-century but was dismissed LBW by Lungi Ngidi, scoring 51 runs off 36 balls with three fours and two sixes.

Naman Dhir added a quick 28 runs off 21 balls before being caught by Tristan Stubbs off T Natarajan's bowling. Mitchell Santner (18 not out) and Corbin Bosch (11 not out) contributed with a few boundaries, helping MI reach a total of 162 runs.

Mukesh Kumar took two wickets, while Patel, Natarajan, Ngidi, and Nigam each claimed one.
