Ricky Ponting Praises Shreyas Iyer's Resilience and Leadership Ahead of IPL Final
Ponting Commends Iyer's Response to Setbacks
Ricky Ponting has shared insights into his productive collaboration with Shreyas Iyer, highlighting how the Indian batsman has coped with recent challenges, including his exclusion from the Test squad.
In an interview with a sports review platform, Ponting lauded Iyer's mental toughness and leadership qualities during a remarkable IPL 2025 season, which has propelled the Punjab Kings to the finals against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Iyer's Determination Shines Through
"I was genuinely disappointed... but he has handled it remarkably well and moved forward," Ponting remarked, referring to Iyer's omission from the Test team. "He possesses a fierce desire to excel every time he steps onto the field and aims to win matches while evolving into the best leader and captain he can be."
Iyer has showcased his talent by amassing 603 runs in the IPL this season and has also been India's top run-scorer in the recent Champions Trophy. Ponting believes this performance should have warranted a recall to the Test side.
Ponting Advocates for Iyer's Selection
"Other players selected for the Test squad have performed well in first-class cricket and IPL, and Shreyas has matched their achievements," Ponting stated.
He emphasized that Iyer's exclusion has only intensified his desire to secure a title for the Punjab Kings.
Strong Coach-Captain Relationship
"I was disappointed he wasn't selected, as I genuinely believed he would be. However, this may fuel his determination as we approach the playoffs," Ponting added.
Ponting and Iyer's partnership began at Delhi Capitals, where they consistently reached the playoffs and even made it to the finals in 2020. Their reunion at Punjab Kings has proven equally successful, with the team now just one victory away from their first IPL title.
Effective Collaboration on the Field
"I enjoy contributing to his development as we collaborate effectively," Ponting noted.
He elaborated on their discussions regarding game strategies and their strong rapport.
"We frequently discuss tactics, and Iyer mentioned that he trusts me to handle the strategic aspects and player selections, allowing him to focus on executing the plans on the field. This collaborative approach has been beneficial this year, and it's great to rekindle that working relationship," Ponting explained.
This synergy has yielded impressive results, with Iyer scoring an outstanding unbeaten 87 off 41 balls against the Mumbai Indians in the qualifier, securing Punjab Kings' place in the final, their second appearance since finishing as runners-up in 2014.
Looking Ahead to the Final
As Iyer gears up for the highly anticipated final against RCB, Ponting's support and confidence could once again serve as a crucial motivator for Iyer, who is aiming for back-to-back titles.
