Remembering Jeff Webb: Pioneer of Modern Cheerleading Passes Away
A Legacy in Cheerleading
Jeff Webb, widely regarded as the father of contemporary competitive cheerleading, has passed away at the age of 76 following a tragic accident while playing pickleball, which resulted in a serious head injury. Varsity Spirit announced his death on social media, stating: “Join us in honouring the life and legacy of Jeff Webb, founder of Varsity Spirit and modern cheerleading.” The tribute emphasized his profound influence in creating a community that will inspire future generations.
Reports indicate that Webb sustained a critical head injury during the incident and was subsequently hospitalized. His family made the difficult decision to take him off life support after he suffered severe trauma. A spokesperson from Varsity Spirit remarked, “Jeff played a crucial role in shaping cheerleading as we know it today and in fostering a community that has impacted countless athletes, coaches, and teams.”
In recent years, Webb's efforts significantly contributed to the growth of cheerleading both in the United States and internationally, including his involvement with the International Cheer Union, which gained full recognition from the International Olympic Committee in 2021.
Webb began his journey as a yell leader at the University of Oklahoma and later worked with the National Cheerleaders Association before founding the Universal Cheerleaders Association in 1974, which eventually became part of Varsity Spirit. He was instrumental in bringing cheerleading to television and transforming it into a more athletic and acrobatic sport.
Additionally, Webb was a mentor to the late Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA. Following Kirk's tragic death, Webb expressed his sorrow, stating, “We may have lost a future president. Charlie Kirk had it all—charisma, faith, respect for everyone... Now, in his absence, tens of thousands of new chapters are rising. His legacy is just beginning.” Webb was present at the White House when Kirk was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Tributes poured in from various sectors of the political and media landscape following his passing. John Solomon remarked, “Jeff was a brilliant businessman and entrepreneur and a joyful warrior who made everyone around him better. He had a passion for ensuring America’s next generations could carry on the torch of liberty.” Jack Posobiec noted Webb's visionary leadership in New Media, stating, “His pivotal contributions to independent media will go down in American history.” Turning Point USA also released a heartfelt statement, remembering Webb as a visionary who shaped generations of young leaders and deeply believed in the power of community and country.
