Record-Breaking Performances at National Federation Senior Athletics Championship
National Records Shattered on Final Day of Championship
At the conclusion of the National Federation Senior Athletics Championship, triple jumper Praveen Chithravel and sprinter Animesh Kujur made headlines by setting new national records in their events. Chithravel matched his own national record with a jump of 17.37m, while Kujur surpassed his previous 200m record in Kochi on Thursday.
Chithravel's final jump of 17.37m secured him the gold medal and ensured his qualification for the World Athletics Championships, as the required mark is 17.22m. "I aimed to achieve a jump of over 17.20m today," he stated, having recorded jumps of 16.99m and 16.87m in his earlier attempts.
In another highlight, Uttar Pradesh's Shaili Singh broke a long-standing meet record in the long jump, clinching gold with a leap of 6.64m, surpassing the previous record of 6.59m set by her coach Anju Bobby George back in 2002.
Kujur, the favorite for the men's 200m final, delivered an impressive performance, clocking 20.40 seconds to win gold and break the previous record of 20.52 seconds held by Amlan Borgohain since 2022. "I felt great during the morning heats, which boosted my confidence and led to this record-breaking performance in the finals," Kujur remarked.
Earlier in the day, Maharashtra's Sanjivani Jadhav secured gold in the women's 5,000m event, also qualifying for the Asian Championships.
