Historic Victory for Indian Women's Hockey Team
Kakamilgahara (Japan): In a stunning display of skill, Deepika Sehrawat, a young striker, netted an astonishing eight goals, leading the Indian women's hockey team to a resounding 19-0 victory over Uzbekistan in their opening Pool B match at the Asian Games on Sunday.
The match was anticipated to be heavily skewed in favor of India, and it certainly played out that way, as Uzbekistan's defense struggled to cope with India's aggressive offensive strategy.
The disparity between the two teams was clear, with India scoring freely, and Deepika showcasing her talent by scoring in the 8th, 22nd, 25th, 33rd, 36th, 38th, 41st, and 54th minutes.
This performance marks the highest number of goals scored by an Indian woman in a single Asian Games match. Deepika, a rising star in drag-flicking, has shown remarkable form since her return from injuries earlier this year.
Other contributors to the scoreline included Ishika Chaudhary (11th, 42nd, 54th), Lalremsiami (7th), Baljeet Kaur (12th), Neha (18th), Navneet Kaur (23rd, 45th), Lalthantluangi (43rd, 51st), and Sakshi Rana (43rd).
India's next challenge will be against Indonesia on Monday.
Ranked second in the tournament, India dominated the Uzbek defense, scoring eight goals in the first half alone.
The scoring spree began with Lalremsiami's close-range field goal, quickly followed by another goal just a minute later.
Ishika then added to the tally with a brilliant first-time shot from the left side of the circle, assisted by Sunelita Toppo.
Baljeet and Neha also found the net, with Deepika scoring her second goal from a penalty corner, bringing the score to 6-0.
Navneet contributed with a field goal, and Deepika capped off the first half with another penalty corner conversion, leading 8-0 at halftime.
The situation worsened for Uzbekistan as India scored 11 more goals in the final two quarters.
This match was also significant for veteran goalkeeper Savita Punia, who made her 320th international appearance, tying with Vandana Katariya as the most capped Indian woman hockey player.
Despite the milestone, Savita had little to do as Uzbekistan struggled to maintain possession.
Deepika emphasized that her focus is not on personal accolades but on leading her team to victory.
"It wasn't particularly challenging. Regardless of the opponent, our focus is on our performance and improving in subsequent quarters and matches," she stated.
"Before the match, we discussed penalty corners, including our finishing positions and angles. I owe my success to my teammates for creating those opportunities for me to score."
The forward expressed the team's primary goal of winning gold and securing a direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
"Our main objective is to clinch the gold, but for now, we are concentrating on one match at a time. I aim to make India proud with our performance."
