RCB Faces Challenges as Bhuvneshwar Kumar Struggles Ahead of IPL 2026

RCB's Title Defense Under Threat

As the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) gear up for IPL 2026, they are determined to defend their championship title. However, the team is currently grappling with significant hurdles, particularly concerning the performance of veteran bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Kumar, who is playing for DY Patil Red, has been unable to regain his form. Once a key player for India, he played a pivotal role in RCB's successful title run last year, securing 17 wickets with an economy rate of 9.28. Despite his ability to perform under pressure, his recent performances in the DY Patil T20 Cup 2026 have raised concerns.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Recent Performance

In his last five matches, Kumar has taken only six wickets while allowing runs at an alarming economy of 10.21. His semi-final outing was particularly disappointing, where he conceded 53 runs in just four overs despite taking two wickets. His best performance recently was in the quarterfinal, where he recorded figures of 1 for 34, yet still failed to maintain an economy below 8.50.

This decline in form is troubling for RCB, who will rely heavily on him in the upcoming season.

Concerns Over RCB's Pace Attack

RCB's bowling lineup is facing additional challenges. The status of Josh Hazlewood remains uncertain as he has been sidelined since November after missing the T20 World Cup 2026. Although Jacob Duffy is available as a backup, he lacks the experience needed for high-pressure situations.

Moreover, Yash Dayal is unlikely to participate due to serious legal issues. Even if RCB finds a replacement, effectively filling Dayal's role will be a daunting task.

Pressure on the Pace Unit

With a significant portion of last season's pace attack unavailable, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is now expected to lead the bowling unit. However, his current form does not instill confidence. Head coach Andy Flower and the management have assembled a strong squad with defined roles, but unforeseen circumstances have disrupted their strategy.

As the defending champions prepare for their title defense, they will be hoping Kumar can regain his form, as his performance will be crucial to RCB's chances of retaining the trophy.
