Ravichandran Ashwin Urges Rishabh Pant to Open for LSG in IPL 2026
Ashwin's Plea to Pant After LSG's Loss
Veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has made a heartfelt request to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain Rishabh Pant regarding his role as an opener. This plea came after LSG faced a six-wicket defeat against the Delhi Capitals at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on April 1.
In the match, Pant opened the batting alongside Mitchell Marsh, but the strategy backfired when Pant was dismissed early due to a run-out incident at the non-striker's end. This marked only the second time in his IPL career that Pant opened the innings, the first being during the IPL 2025 match against the Gujarat Titans.
Despite the previous success of Marsh and Markram as openers for LSG in the last IPL season, the management decided to make a change, promoting Pant to the top order to inject more aggression during the powerplay. Unfortunately, this decision did not yield the desired results against the Delhi Capitals, as Pant scored just 7 runs off 9 balls before being run out.
Ashwin's Strong Recommendation
After the match, when asked if he would continue to open for the rest of the season, Pant indicated that it was a '50-50' decision, leaving uncertainty about his role. In contrast, Ashwin expressed his desire for Pant to open in all 14 league matches. On his YouTube channel 'Ash ki Baat', Ashwin urged the team management to support Pant in playing freely at the top of the order.
Ashwin commented, "It was unfortunate how Rishabh got out, and even more so how he responded post-match. He mentioned it was a 50-50 call regarding opening, which is concerning. I humbly request that he opens in every match. The management should encourage him to play without restraint during the powerplay."
Rishabh Pant's Performance and Future
In the previous IPL season, Pant had a modest performance, scoring 269 runs, which included one century and one fifty, with an average of 24.45 and a strike rate of 133.17 across 14 matches. He aimed to regain his T20 form by opening against the Delhi Capitals, but his early dismissal put LSG under pressure.
The decision to promote Pant as an opener has ignited discussions about whether LSG should maintain this aggressive strategy or revert to a more stable opening pair, especially after the initial match did not go as planned. Throughout his T20 career, Pant has opened 23 times, accumulating 672 runs, including one century and three fifties, with an average of 30.54 and a strike rate of 158.49. This record showcases his potential but also emphasizes the need for consistency.
Given the successful opening partnership of Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh last season, where they scored 574 runs together, the choice to disrupt this combination for Pant raises questions about whether LSG acted too hastily. The upcoming matches will reveal if Pant will continue as an opener or if the team will revert to the Marsh-Markram combination, especially with Ashwin advocating for Pant's persistence at the top.
