Ravichandran Ashwin Praises MS Dhoni's Unique Keeping Skills
Ashwin's Admiration for Dhoni
Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed high regard for MS Dhoni, stating that he has never seen anyone keep wickets behind the stumps like the former Indian captain, especially when it comes to spin bowlers. Ashwin, who has played alongside Dhoni in both the Indian national team and Chennai Super Kings, reminisced about how Dhoni's wicketkeeping and clear mindset were even more remarkable than his exceptional captaincy.
Dhoni's Impact on the Game
In an interview with a media outlet, Ashwin remarked, 'His wicketkeeping has always amazed me. While people often praise his captaincy, which is well-deserved, his success speaks volumes.' He highlighted two aspects that set Dhoni apart: his ability as a middle-order batsman who could finish games and his unparalleled wicketkeeping skills against spin bowlers. 'I have not seen another wicketkeeper like him,' Ashwin added.
Trust and Independence
Ashwin noted that Dhoni never interfered with the bowlers' field placements. 'He never set the field for me; I did that myself. He would simply advise, 'Don’t overthink it. If a big shot is hit off your ball, it’s fine. Let the batsman take risks; just bowl according to your field.' He had complete faith in me,' Ashwin explained.
Memorable Moments
Recalling a significant moment from the 2011 IPL final, Ashwin praised Dhoni's exceptional catch to dismiss Chris Gayle for a duck. 'You can discuss match strategies and wickets falling, but the way Dhoni caught that ball was extraordinary,' he said.
Ashwin's IPL Journey
Throughout his IPL career, Ashwin has played for five franchises, taking 187 wickets in 221 matches. He acknowledged that despite captaining Punjab Kings in 2018-19, he couldn't fully make the team his own, but he found his time with Rajasthan Royals to be the most fulfilling. 'Punjab picked me in 2018, and honestly, I gave it my all. However, I feel I couldn't make that team my own. While I may not have achieved much as a captain, I learned a lot,' he reflected.
Reflections on Rajasthan Royals
Discussing his experience with Rajasthan, Ashwin said, 'I spent three years there, which helped me return to the Indian team. The way Rajasthan utilized me was fantastic. I thoroughly enjoyed my cricket there. My only regret is not winning a title with Rajasthan Royals.'
