Ashwin Faces Fine for Umpire Dispute

Ravichandran Ashwin has been penalized 30% of his match fee following an outburst directed at an umpire's decision during a Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match on June 8. The match took place between the Dindigul Dragons and Tiruppur Tamizhans at the Sri Ramakrishna College Ground in Coimbatore.

A TNPL official informed a media outlet:

"A hearing was held by the match referee post-game. Ashwin received a 10% fine for showing dissent towards the umpires and an additional 20% for improper use of equipment. He accepted the penalties."

Attempts to reach Ashwin for immediate comments were unsuccessful.

Leading the Dindigul Dragons, Ashwin was given out lbw to R. Sai Kishore while attempting a sweep shot. The delivery appeared to have pitched outside the leg stump, but the team had already exhausted both reviews on wide-ball calls. Umpire Kritika made the ruling, with Arjun Kripal Singh serving as the match referee.

Ashwin's Frustration Captured

Ashwin's visible frustration was evident, as a video capturing the incident has circulated widely. In the footage, he is seen arguing with the umpire, striking his pads with his bat, and tossing his gloves in anger as he exited the field. He had managed to score 18 runs off 11 balls, including two fours and a six, before his dismissal.

At the time of his exit, Dindigul was at 39/1 in the fifth over. Following Ashwin's departure, the team collapsed, losing all nine remaining wickets for just 54 runs. The Tiruppur Tamizhans successfully chased down the 94-run target, winning by nine wickets with 49 balls to spare.

This season marks the ninth edition of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL), which commenced on June 6 and will run until July 6. The Dindigul Dragons have secured one victory out of two matches played thus far, placing them fifth in the points table with one win and one loss.
