Ravichandran Ashwin, a former Indian cricketer, expressed that he would refrain from evaluating Hardik Pandya's captaincy of the Mumbai Indians (MI), stating that the entire team has not performed well. He emphasized that attributing the team's lackluster performance solely to the captain is unjust.
Pandya's Challenges Since Returning to MI
Since his controversial return to MI as captain in 2024, Hardik has yet to secure a trophy for the franchise, having previously led the Gujarat Titans (GT) to victory. Currently, MI finds itself in the lower half of the standings with only four wins out of 12 matches, effectively eliminating them from playoff contention.

This season, Hardik has struggled to maintain his usual scoring rates, accumulating just 146 runs in eight innings at an average of 20.85 and a strike rate exceeding 136, with a top score of 40. Additionally, he has taken only four wickets at an average of 61.50 and an economy rate nearing 12.
Ashwin's Comments on Blame
In an interview with ESPNcricinfo TimeOut, Ashwin stated, "I would not review his captaincy this year at all. When seasons go awry, blaming the captain is quite unfair. The entire team has failed to perform, and placing the burden solely on Hardik is excessive."

Several prominent players have also underperformed this season, including Suryakumar Yadav (195 runs in 11 innings), Sherfane Rutherford (123 runs in seven innings), Jasprit Bumrah (three wickets in 12 matches), Deepak Chahar (five wickets in six matches), and Trent Boult (two wickets in five matches). Injuries to key players like Rohit Sharma and Mitchell Santner have further complicated matters for the team.

Ashwin acknowledged that Hardik had previously succeeded as a leader with GT, where he led the team to a title and a runner-up finish. Ashwin raised concerns regarding Hardik's physical fitness, particularly his batting performance and timing against hard-length deliveries. He speculated whether Hardik might be dealing with a serious issue like tennis elbow or if his bat is too heavy.

Despite the challenges, Ashwin referred to Hardik as a "once-in-a-generation" player who has been pivotal in India's T20I success, including two consecutive World Cup victories. He acknowledged that even exceptional players can have off seasons, stating, "Hardik enjoys his space and tends to stay in his own zone. My primary concern is his timing at the crease."
