Ashwin's Support for Gaikwad

Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his opinion that opener Ruturaj Gaikwad deserves a longer stint in the ODI team following his impressive century against South Africa in Raipur on Thursday.

After seven innings, where he managed only one fifty-plus score (71 against Australia), Ruturaj capitalized on his chance, scoring a flawless 105 off 83 balls, featuring 12 fours and two sixes. His exceptional shot selection, keen judgment, and effective running between the wickets, particularly with batting partner Virat Kohli, were highlights of his innings.

Opportunity Arises Amid Injuries

Ruturaj's opportunity came as skipper Shubman Gill and middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer were sidelined due to injuries. He had previously earned the 'Player of the Series' title for India A against South Africa A, amassing 210 runs in three matches, including a century and a fifty. After a disappointing outing in Ranchi where he scored just eight runs, he seized the moment in Raipur.

Ashwin's Insights on Gaikwad's Potential

On his YouTube channel, 'Ash ki Baat', Ashwin remarked, "Some players are affected by external pressures, while others are recognized for their talent and potential. Ruturaj has often been overlooked despite his performances, and injuries have hindered his chances, which is unfortunate."

He further stated, "Ruturaj has the potential to bat at number four. He handles seamers well, and the only way to dismiss him early is through initial swing, which can be avoided by batting at that position. His ability against spin is unmatched, and he possesses a complete range of shots. A player of his caliber should be given a fair chance to prove himself at No. 4."

Ashwin also suggested that even if Shreyas Iyer returns, Ruturaj could still fit into the lineup, emphasizing that both he and Virat Kohli could adapt to batting higher up the order.

Celebrating the Kohli-Gaikwad Partnership

Ashwin praised the remarkable 195-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad, which set a new record for any wicket in ODIs between India and South Africa. He noted their complementary styles of play, stating, "Both batted excellently, showcasing a great partnership. Although their efforts were overshadowed by South Africa's performance, their synergy was impressive. Ruturaj's ability to counter Maharaj was particularly noteworthy, and without Shreyas Iyer, he has demonstrated his capacity to accelerate the game."

Upcoming Series Decider in Visakhapatnam

India is set to face South Africa in the series decider in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, following South Africa's successful chase of 359 runs in Raipur, led by a stellar century from Aiden Markram.

Virat Kohli boasts an outstanding record in Visakhapatnam, having scored 587 runs in seven innings at an impressive average of 97.83, including three centuries and two fifties, with a top score of 157.
