Ravi Shastri Offers Key Guidance to Abhishek Sharma Ahead of T20 World Cup Final
Shastri's Insights on Sharma's Performance
Ravi Shastri, the former head coach of India, has shared important advice for opener Abhishek Sharma after India's narrow semifinal victory against England in the T20 World Cup 2026. Despite securing a spot in the final with a seven-run win, Sharma's performance has raised concerns.
In the semifinal, the left-handed batsman scored just nine runs off seven deliveries before being dismissed by Will Jacks, continuing a disappointing trend throughout the tournament. Over seven matches, he has failed to accumulate 100 runs, averaging 12.71 with a strike rate below 131.
Advice from Shastri to Abhishek Sharma
Discussing Sharma's role in the team, Shastri emphasized the importance of support from the management and encouraged the player to have faith in his abilities. He stated, "They need to stick with him now. Avoid making changes since the team is performing well. Encourage him to trust his skills and not to retreat into a shell of hesitation or timidity."
Shastri further urged Sharma to maintain his confidence, saying, "We believe in you, trust your strengths, and go out there and play. The next game could be your breakthrough."
Sharma's tournament began poorly, with three consecutive ducks, and he has only managed one significant half-century against Zimbabwe during the Super Eights.
Sanju Samson's Rising Form
While Abhishek Sharma has struggled, his opening partner Sanju Samson has emerged as a standout player. Shastri commended Samson for his mental resilience and his ability to deliver match-winning performances consistently.
Samson scored an impressive unbeaten 97 off 50 balls against the West Indies in the Super Eights, followed by a remarkable 89 off 42 balls in the semifinal against England.
Shastri noted Samson's enhanced consistency and shot selection, stating, "He possesses every shot in the book, but there have been moments of concentration lapses. He has toughened up mentally, and his skill and talent have never been in question since he joined the team."
He added, "People have been disappointed with the lack of consistent runs, but he has matured now. At just 31, he is a true match-winner. His shots today showcased class, finesse, power, and brute strength."
Initially omitted from the starting lineup, Samson has responded with back-to-back Player of the Match performances, bolstering India's batting order as they head into the final.
