Ravi Shastri Highlights Sanju Samson's Key to Success in T20 World Cup 2026
Shastri's Insights on Samson's Performance
Ravi Shastri, the former Indian cricketer and coach of the men's cricket team, has shared his thoughts on what he believes has contributed to Sanju Samson's recent achievements in the ongoing ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. After facing a series of low scores, Samson has emerged as a 'genuine match-winner,' according to Shastri.
Initially, Samson was not selected for the T20 World Cup due to a disappointing home series against New Zealand, which led to Ishan Kishan being chosen as the opener and Rinku Singh taking his place. However, he has since made a remarkable comeback, earning back-to-back Player of the Match awards and leading India to the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand. His latest impressive performance was in the semifinal against England, where he scored 89 runs off just 42 balls, hitting seven sixes. This followed his unbeaten 97-run innings against West Indies, which secured India's spot in the semifinals.
Key Factors Behind Samson's Success
Shastri attributes Samson's recent success to his newfound consistency, improved shot selection, and a stronger mental approach. He noted that while Samson possesses a wide array of shots, earlier mental lapses hindered his performance. Now, he seems to have developed a tougher mindset.
"I believe he has finally recognized the need for consistency. He must be more judicious with his shot choices and trust his abilities. Sanju has every shot in his arsenal, but he previously struggled with concentration. Now, he appears to have strengthened his mental game, and his talent has never been in question since he joined the team," Shastri remarked during The ICC Review.
Encouragement for Samson
Shastri praised Samson as a 'genuine match-winner,' emphasizing that his recent performances reflect his skill, power, and class. He encouraged the team to continue supporting him, urging them to help him trust his strengths and play with confidence. Shastri believes that Samson's next performance could be his best yet, stating, "At just 31 years old, he is a true match-winner. The shots he played in the semifinal showcased his class and power. The team should stick with him and encourage him to believe in his abilities. He should not shy away or play tentatively; instead, he should embrace his strengths and go out there to perform. The next game could be his standout performance."
Thrilling Match Against England
In a high-scoring encounter, Sanju Samson's explosive 89 runs off 42 balls set the stage for India's impressive total of 253/7 in the first innings. England remained competitive throughout their chase, largely due to Jacob Bethell's remarkable century. Ultimately, Jasprit Bumrah's exceptional bowling proved crucial, as India clinched victory by a narrow seven-run margin.
Batting first, India benefited from Samson's fiery innings, complemented by contributions from Shivam Dube (43 runs off 25 balls), Ishan Kishan (39 runs off 18 balls), Hardik Pandya (27 runs off 12 balls), and Tilak Varma (21 runs off 7 balls). Despite having England at 95/4, the match turned when Bethell (105 runs off 48 balls) and Will Jacks (35 runs off 20 balls) formed a counter-attacking partnership. The turning point came in the 18th over, where Bumrah conceded only six runs, putting pressure on England, who needed 45 runs from the last three overs. Hardik Pandya further tightened the screws, allowing only nine runs in the penultimate over and taking the wicket of Sam Curran. Although Bethell and Jofra Archer made a late push, England fell short, finishing at 246/7.
Upcoming Final Against New Zealand
India is set to face New Zealand in the final, scheduled for March 8 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The team aims to maintain their impressive form and secure another significant ICC title.
