Rajeev Shukla Addresses BCCI President Speculation as Routine Procedure

Shukla Responds to BCCI Leadership Speculation

Rajeev Shukla, the current Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has dismissed rumors regarding his potential appointment as interim president following Roger Binny's term. He described the situation as a standard procedural matter. Reports circulated on social media on Monday, indicating that Shukla might take over from Binny, who will celebrate his 70th birthday on July 19. At 65, Shukla is anticipated to serve temporarily for three months, but he stressed that the situation should not be exaggerated.

Sources indicate that with the Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for September, the month he turns 66, Shukla may consider running for the full-time president position during the elections.

Addressing the ongoing chatter, Shukla labeled the speculation as 'unnecessary discussions.' He clarified that stepping into the interim role is merely a procedural step, devoid of any deeper implications.

'These are unnecessary discussions. When a position is about to become vacant, the next person in line typically assumes the interim role until the election. It’s just a procedural matter,' Shukla stated.

Roger Binny was elected as the 36th president of the BCCI in October 2022, succeeding former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, who completed a three-year term. Notably, Binny was the sole candidate to submit a nomination for the presidency.

Under Binny's leadership, India secured two white-ball titles, including the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also launched the Women’s Premier League (WPL), a women's franchise cricket league inspired by the successful IPL.

During his presidency, significant measures were taken to enhance domestic cricket, including improved incentives, pay, and increased senior participation in domestic tournaments.

Binny played a pivotal role in India's inaugural World Cup victory, claiming 18 wickets, the highest for India in the 1983 World Cup. He has also served on the BCCI selection committee.
