Rajasthan Royals Fall Short Against Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026
Riyan Parag Acknowledges Team's Shortcomings
After a four-wicket defeat to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their IPL 2026 match on Sunday evening, Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Riyan Parag admitted that his team did not score enough runs. He reflected on the game, noting that RR misread the pitch conditions and failed to execute essential skills such as catching and maintaining disciplined bowling.
Parag mentioned that the team anticipated a competitive score of around 170 runs but fell short. "We thought it was a 170 wicket, so we were definitely under par. It was our match to win. No excuses for dropping catches or bowling in ways that favored the batsmen. The pitch had a lot of spin. I believed that spin was the way to go, as demonstrated by Jaddu, Bishi, and Punja's bowling. Brijesh was also ready to bowl in the 14th and 16th overs," he stated during the post-match presentation.
Tactical Adjustments and Game Plan
Parag elaborated on the tactical changes made during the match, particularly the increased focus on spin bowling due to the pitch conditions and the presence of left-handed batsmen in the opposing team. He noted, "They lost wickets, and there were left-handers. After Bishnoi's over, I felt spinners might be more effective here, considering the left-handers. Our game plan was solid; it was a 170 wicket. We tried to give ourselves time, but it didn't work out. Yash Raj Punja bowled exceptionally well, although he showed some nerves in his first over."
Rinku Singh's Performance Leads KKR to Victory
KKR achieved a thrilling four-wicket victory over RR in their IPL 2026 encounter, successfully chasing down a target of 156 runs. RR batted first but could only manage 155/9, despite a promising start from Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who scored 46, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, who contributed 39 runs. Varun Chakravarthy had a standout performance, taking three wickets and reaching 200 T20 wickets, while Kartik Tyagi also claimed three wickets, and Sunil Narine added two.
In their response, KKR faced early challenges, finding themselves at 5/2 and later 37/3. A middle-order collapse left them struggling at 85/6. However, Rinku Singh (50*) and Anukul Roy formed a vital partnership that revived their chase. Needing 21 runs off the last two overs, Rinku accelerated the innings, ultimately sealing the victory with a six, finishing the match with balls to spare.
