R Praggnanandhaa's Remarkable Victory

The Norway Chess 2026 tournament is turning out to be a remarkable event for Indian players. Following Divya Deshmukh's impressive win against top-ranked Ju Wenjun, R Praggnanandhaa has also made headlines by defeating the reigning World No. 1, Magnus Carlsen. In a gripping match, the 20-year-old Indian emerged victorious, marking his second win against Carlsen at this venue, having previously triumphed over him in Norway Chess 2024. Despite this significant achievement, Praggnanandhaa expressed dissatisfaction with his performance during an exclusive interview with Sports Now.

Starting the round at the bottom of the leaderboard with just one point, Praggnanandhaa entered the match with a clear strategy to attack. After 62 intense moves, a visibly frustrated Carlsen had no option but to resign, resulting in a stunning victory for the Indian player. This win has propelled Praggnanandhaa to the second spot in the tournament standings, while Carlsen has unexpectedly fallen to the last position.

Praggnanandhaa acknowledged the importance of his win against Carlsen for his tournament prospects, stating that it significantly improved his ranking. However, he was critical of his gameplay, describing it as a 'street fight' where he lost control during crucial time scrambles. "Yeah, I think (this) win is really crucial for the tournament to try and get back my standings," he remarked. "But, I mean, overall as a game, I am not really satisfied. But, okay, it's just a street fight. So, anything can happen. And these time scrambles, yeah, I lost control. But, yeah, it was a really interesting game," he added.

'Everyone Is Stronger'

Defeating Magnus Carlsen is a significant milestone, yet Praggnanandhaa maintained his focus and did not allow the stature of his opponent to alter his approach. When questioned if competing against the World No. 1 demanded more effort than against other players, he emphasized that at this elite level, every match is challenging. "Yeah, but, okay, I think everyone is stronger. So, it requires the same effort and you have to be alert throughout the game," the Indian Grandmaster explained.

Looking ahead, R Praggnanandhaa is set to compete against Vincent Keymer in Round 4, while Magnus Carlsen will face another Indian player, D Gukesh, in the upcoming round.
