PV Sindhu Reenters BWF Top 10 After Impressive Performance
Sindhu's Remarkable Comeback
Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has made a significant return to the BWF World Rankings, re-entering the top 10 on June 2, following her strong quarterfinal performance at the Singapore Open Super 750. This marks her first time back in the elite group after a hiatus of 954 days, having last been ranked in the top 10 in March 2023. Sindhu initially fell out of the rankings due to a challenging period following an injury at the Commonwealth Games in 2022, where she secured a gold medal.
In her first match at the Indonesia Open Super 1000 in Jakarta, Sindhu showcased her skills with a hard-fought victory over her long-time rival, Busanan Ongbamrungphan from Thailand, winning 25-23, 21-16. This win marks her 21st against Busanan in their 22 encounters. Sindhu is now looking forward to a potential rematch with South Korea's An Se Young, the current World No. 1, who previously defeated her in the Singapore Open quarterfinals. Sindhu has yet to secure a win against Young, currently on a nine-match losing streak against her.
As of now, Sindhu holds the 10th position in the world rankings with 59,781 points. An Se Young leads the rankings and recently celebrated her 37th BWF World Tour title at the Singapore Open, maintaining her top position for 145 weeks. India's next highest-ranked player, Unnati Hooda, is currently in 23rd place, having reached a career-high of 19 earlier this year.
In men's singles, Lakshya Sen is India's top player, ranked 10th, while Ayush Shetty, silver medallist at the Asian Championships, is in 20th place. Lakshya's journey at the Indonesia Open ended with a defeat to local player Alwi Farhan.
Satwik and Chirag Shine in Men's Doubles
In men's doubles, the duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who recently ended a two-year title drought at the Singapore Open, are currently ranked fourth globally with 89,311 points. Their impressive title run included a stunning victory over the World No. 1 pair, Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae, in the semifinals, breaking the Koreans' 34-match winning streak, followed by a win against Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in the final.
Meanwhile, Hariharan Amsakarunan and MR Arjun, who progressed to the Round of 16 at the Indonesia Open, have climbed to 30th in the world rankings.
In women's doubles, no Indian pairs are currently in the top 40, with Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand being the highest-ranked at 41st. They faced an early exit at the Indonesia Open, marking their return to the World Tour since March 2026. In mixed doubles, Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun improved their ranking to 23rd after reaching the semifinals at the Singapore Open.
