Vantaa, Oct 7: PV Sindhu kicked off her Arctic Open 2026 journey with a straightforward victory over Canada's Wen Yu Zhang on Tuesday. However, the Indian women's singles team faced several challenges in the first round of the BWF Super 500 tournament held in Vantaa, Finland.
The sixth-seeded Sindhu required just 28 minutes to defeat Zhang with scores of 21-8, 21-11, securing her spot in the next round. The two-time Olympic medalist, who reached the quarterfinals at the Asian Games 2026, is set to face Japan's Riko Gunji next.
Sindhu dominated the match from the beginning against Zhang, who had qualified for the main draw. The Indian player quickly built a significant lead in the first game, preventing her Canadian rival from gaining any momentum.
While Sindhu advanced smoothly, her fellow competitors did not fare as well.
Unnati Hooda nearly completed a comeback against China's Han Qianxi. After losing the first game 21-16, Hooda fought back to win the second 21-15. The deciding game was closely contested, but Han managed to clinch it 24-22 after a grueling 68 minutes.
Ashmita Chaliha also gave her higher-ranked opponent a tough match. After suffering a 21-7 loss in the first game against seventh seed Line Christophersen, Chaliha bounced back to take the second game 21-14. Ultimately, Christophersen edged out the match 26-24 in the final game.
Malvika Bansod's journey also ended in the first round. After qualifying with a win over Chinese Taipei's Sung Shuo-yun, she was defeated by Scotland's Kirsty Gilmour with scores of 21-18, 21-13.
Isharani Baruah faced a formidable opponent in top seed Ratchanok Intanon, the former world champion from Thailand, who won decisively with scores of 21-10, 21-15.
On a positive note, Tanvi Sharma secured a victory for India in the women's singles by defeating Chinese Taipei's Chiu Pin-Chian 21-15, 21-17.
India's mixed doubles team also encountered difficulties, as Ishan Bhatnagar and Shruti Mishra suffered a heavy defeat to Thailand's Pakkapon Teeraratsakul and Sapsiree Taerattanachai, with scores of 21-3, 21-6.
In the men's singles qualifiers, there was better news. Tharun Mannepalli triumphed over Belgium's Julien Carraggi with scores of 21-12, 19-21, 21-13, while Rounak Chouhan came back from a game down to defeat Israel's Daniel Dubovenko 18-21, 21-17, 21-19.
Both Mannepalli and Chouhan have now secured their places in the main draw, joining established Indian players Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy.
However, there was disappointment for Achutaditya Rao Doddavarapu and Arjun Reddy Pochana in the men's doubles qualifiers, as they failed to advance to the main draw.
The Arctic Open marks the return of the BWF World Tour following the Asian Games break, with Indian players eager to gain momentum on the international stage. In women's singles, Sindhu and Sharma remain in contention after the first round, while the men's draw has welcomed two additional Indian entries through qualifying.
