Punjab Kings Triumph Over Mumbai Indians to Reach IPL 2025 Final
Thrilling Qualifier 2 at Narendra Modi Stadium
In an exhilarating Qualifier 2 match at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) triumphed over the Mumbai Indians (MI) in a rain-affected showdown, securing their place in the IPL 2025 final. The game was filled with electrifying moments and impressive performances, but both teams faced penalties for significant slow over-rate violations, leading to strict actions from the BCCI.
The match commenced at 9:45 PM IST after a rain delay, but despite the extended time, both teams struggled to meet the required over-rate, pushing the conclusion to around 2:00 AM IST. Punjab successfully chased down the target with one over remaining.
The BCCI imposed heavy fines due to the infractions. For PBKS, this marked their second offense of the season, resulting in a fine of Rs 24 lakh for captain Shreyas Iyer, while other players, including the Impact Player, faced penalties of Rs 6 lakh or 25% of their match fee, whichever was lower.
MI, having committed a third violation, faced even harsher penalties. Captain Hardik Pandya was fined Rs 30 lakh, and the rest of the team incurred fines of Rs 12 lakh or 50% of their match fees. However, Hardik avoided suspension due to a recent rule change that escalates fines and demerit points for repeated offenses but does not impose suspensions.
On the field, Shreyas Iyer shone brightly, scoring an impressive unbeaten 87 runs off just 41 balls, leading the PBKS chase effectively. His performance was crucial as Punjab chased down the target in 19 overs.
Earlier, MI set a competitive score but struggled to defend it due to subpar bowling and fielding. The PBKS batting lineup, spearheaded by Iyer, displayed determination and skill, marking their first IPL final appearance since 2014.
Upcoming Final Against RCB
Punjab Kings are set to face the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the highly anticipated final on June 3. With neither team having previously won the IPL trophy, fans can expect an exciting showdown that will crown a new champion.
While the night was a celebration for Punjab, it also served as a reminder for franchises about the importance of maintaining discipline during matches, as the BCCI aims to enforce stricter regulations on slow over-rates in the future.
