Mohali (Punjab) [India], March 24: A remarkable achievement for Punjab FC as six of its players have been selected for the Indian national team competing in the SAFF U-20 Championship currently taking place in the Maldives. This highlights Punjab FC's reputation for having one of the premier youth development programs in the nation.
The squad, announced by Head Coach Mahesh Gawali, features Karish Soram, Usham Singh Thoungamba, Rishikanta Meitei Laishram, Aniket Yadav, Omang Dudum, and Vishal Yadav, as stated in an official press release.
India's campaign kicks off on March 26 against Pakistan, followed by a match against Bangladesh on March 28.
The top two teams from the group will advance to the semi-finals scheduled for April 1, with the final match set for April 3.
Last year, India clinched the SAFF Championship title in an Under-19 event held in Yupia, Arunachal Pradesh.
All six players were integral members of the Punjab FC U-17 team that triumphed in the AIFF U-17 Youth League, with Aniket serving as captain.
Karish, a solid defender, has previously represented India at youth levels and was part of the victorious AIFF U-17 Youth League squad. Usham Singh, known for his versatility, played a crucial role in the U-17 championship win.
Rishikanta Meitei Laishram, a skilled midfielder, has consistently performed well in Punjab FC's youth ranks, providing balance in midfield. Aniket Yadav, the captain of the AIFF U-17 Youth League-winning team, has emerged as a natural leader in the midfield.
Omang Dudum, the sole returning player from India's last championship-winning squad, scored three goals in the previous tournament and aims to maintain his impressive attacking form. Vishal Yadav has already made his debut in the ISL for Punjab FC, becoming one of the youngest players to participate in the league.
Giuseppe Cristaldi, Technical Director of Punjab FC's Youth Program, expressed pride in the selection, stating, “We are thrilled to see six of our young talents represent the national team at the SAFF U-20 Championship. This is a testament to our robust youth development system and the dedication of our players and coaching staff. We believe they will make a significant impact and continue to develop both domestically and internationally.”
