Margao: Punjab FC, having remained unbeaten in the group stage, is set to face the formidable East Bengal in the Super Cup's first semifinal on Thursday.
Both teams advanced as the top teams in their respective groups.
Punjab FC achieved an unbeaten record with two victories, culminating in a tense penalty shootout against Bengaluru FC after a goalless draw in their final group match.
With both teams finishing with seven points and equal goals scored, penalties were necessary to determine the group winner.
Punjab FC kicked off their group stage with a convincing 3-0 win over Gokulam Kerala FC, thanks to goals from Nikhil Prabhu, Princeton Rebello, and an own goal by Gursimrat Singh. They followed this with another 3-0 triumph against Mohammedan SC, featuring goals from Ninthoinganba Meetei, Samir Zeljkovic, and Manglenthang Kipgen.
Conversely, East Bengal began their campaign with a 2-2 draw against Dempo SC but bounced back with a 4-0 victory over Chennaiyin FC. In their final group match against Mohun Bagan Super Giant, they secured a 0-0 draw, qualifying for the semifinals based on goal difference.
Punjab FC's head coach, Panagiotis Dilmperis, has relied on a young Indian squad throughout the group stages and will welcome back Muhammad Suhail, who missed the last match due to injury.
Key players like Ninthoinganba Meetei and Manglenthang Kipgen have excelled in the attack, supported by captain Nikhil Prabhu and Princeton Rebello in midfield.
Dilmperis opted for an all-Indian defense comprising Suresh Meetei, Bijoy Varghese, Khaimingthang Lhungdim, and Muhammed Uvais, although Uvais will be absent due to a suspension from two yellow cards.
New foreign signings, including Dani Ramirez, Samir Zeljkovic, and Nsungusi Effiong, have made significant contributions during the group stage, while defender Pablo Renan Dos Santos is yet to make his debut.
Additionally, Nigerian winger Bede Amarachi Osuji has joined the squad and will add depth to their attacking options.
East Bengal has bolstered their lineup with strong foreign players alongside notable Indian talents such as Naorem Mahesh Singh, Bipin Singh, Jay Gupta, Anwar Ali, and Edmund Lalrindika.
Miguel Ferreira, Kevin Sibille, and Hiroshi Ibusuki have already found the net for East Bengal, with Saul Crespo and Palestinian international Mohammed Rashid anchoring the midfield.
Moroccan striker Hamid Ahadad has also been a standout performer, leading the attack for the Red and Gold brigade.
