Gonda, May 14: The Pro Wrestling League (PWL) continues to make waves in the domestic wrestling scene, as several athletes from its fifth season showcased exceptional skills at the Senior Open Ranking wrestling tournament held in Gonda from May 10 to 12.
Medal winners from this event have secured spots for the selection trials for the upcoming World Championships and Commonwealth Championships, highlighting the significance of the PWL in enhancing India's wrestling performance.
Numerous wrestlers from the fifth season of PWL achieved podium finishes, demonstrating the benefits of elite-level competition and exposure to both domestic and international talents that the league provides.
Following their international successes, these wrestlers' achievements in domestic competitions further emphasize the talent pool cultivated by the league.
In the men's freestyle events, Sagar from the UP Dominators claimed gold in the 57kg category, while Yash Tushir of Maharashtra Kesari triumphed in the 74kg category, showcasing dominant performances throughout the tournament.
Tushir's victory is particularly noteworthy as it marks a remarkable comeback. The former World Junior bronze medallist faced a challenging period due to injuries to his knee, shoulder, and toe, requiring six months of rehabilitation before returning to the mat.
In Gonda, he made a strong statement by defeating five opponents decisively to secure the gold medal and position himself for future global competitions.
Naveen from the Tigers of Mumbai Dangals also earned gold in the 79kg category, while renowned Indian wrestler Deepak Punia, representing Maharashtra Kesari in PWL Season 5, added another gold to his impressive collection by winning the 92kg division.
In the women's category, Anjali from Delhi Dangal Warriors made her mark by winning the silver medal in the 62kg category, enhancing her chances for the national team selection.
"These performances underscore the growing significance of PWL as a platform that allows Indian wrestlers to excel under pressure at the highest levels. By uniting Olympians, international stars, seasoned Indian wrestlers, and emerging talents within a competitive framework, the league plays a crucial role in the advancement of wrestling in India," stated Akhil Gupta, CEO & Promoter of PWL.
The league's influence is further illustrated by the fact that PWL wrestlers contributed to 11 of India's 17 medals at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championships, solidifying its role as a vital pathway for Indian wrestlers to achieve success on both continental and global stages.
