Prithvi Shaw's New Chapter: Joining Maharashtra for the 2025 Domestic Season

Prithvi Shaw's Transition to Maharashtra
In a significant move, Prithvi Shaw, the right-handed opener, has officially left Mumbai after securing a no objection certificate (NOC) and is set to play for Maharashtra in the upcoming 2025/26 domestic cricket season.
In his communication to the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA), Shaw expressed that he was presented with an exciting opportunity to pursue professional cricket with another state association, which has now been confirmed as Maharashtra.
Shaw stated, “At this point in my career, I feel that joining the Maharashtra team will facilitate my growth as a cricketer. I am sincerely thankful to the Mumbai Cricket Association for their support and the opportunities I have had over the years. The Maharashtra Cricket Association has made impressive strides in improving cricket infrastructure throughout the state.”
Shaw further commented, “The Maharashtra Premier League, Women’s MPL, Corporate Shield, and D.B. Deodhar Tournament are clear indicators of their vision. I am confident that being part of such a forward-thinking environment will greatly benefit my cricketing journey. I look forward to playing alongside talented individuals like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Rajneesh Gurbani, and Mukesh Choudhary in the Maharashtra squad.”
Having represented India in five Tests, six ODIs, and one T20I, Shaw's career highlights include leading the U19 team to victory in the 2018 World Cup in New Zealand and scoring a century on his Test debut against the West Indies in Rajkot.
However, his recent performance has been marred by fitness concerns and declining form, leading to his exclusion from the Mumbai team during the initial phase of last year's Ranji Trophy due to these issues.
He made a comeback during Mumbai's successful 2024 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy campaign, where he scored 197 runs in nine matches at an impressive strike rate of 156.34. Nevertheless, he was not selected for the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT) squad.
In his first-class career with Mumbai, Shaw has played 32 matches, accumulating 2,648 runs at an average of 49.03, which includes seven centuries and ten half-centuries. In List A cricket, he has scored 3,399 runs in 29 games, with ten centuries and 14 fifties at an average of 55.72.
In the IPL, Shaw was released by the Delhi Capitals after the 2024 season and went unsold in the 2025 mega auction, failing to attract interest from any of the ten teams as a replacement player during the tournament.
He is now anticipated to participate in the ongoing D.B. Deodhar Tournament, a prestigious intra-state competition organized by the Maharashtra Cricket Association, which also serves as a selection platform for upcoming senior men's tournaments in the domestic circuit.
Rohit Pawar, the MCA President, expressed, “We are thrilled to have a player of Prithvi Shaw’s caliber join the Maharashtra team. His addition significantly strengthens our already talented squad, which includes experienced players like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ankit Bawne, Rahul Tripathi, Mukesh Choudhary, and Rajneesh Gurbani. Shaw’s international and IPL experience will be crucial, especially in mentoring younger players. I extend my sincere gratitude to the MCA Apex Council and the Cricket Advisory Committee for their support in this decision. The Maharashtra Cricket Association is fully behind Prithvi in this new chapter, and we wish him all the best for the upcoming seasons.”
