Prithvi Shaw Returns to IPL with Delhi Capitals After Auction Heartbreak
Prithvi Shaw's Comeback to IPL
Maharashtra's opener, Prithvi Shaw, is set to re-enter the Indian Premier League (IPL) after being acquired by the Delhi Capitals during the IPL 2026 Auction held in Abu Dhabi on December 16. Shaw, who began his IPL career with the Capitals in 2018, was initially signed as a promising young talent following his leadership role in India's U19 World Cup victory in 2017.
Challenges Faced by Shaw
At 27 years old, Shaw was consistently retained by the Delhi franchise until his release in 2024. During the Mega Auction last year, he was listed with a base price of INR 75 lakh but unfortunately went unsold, marking a significant downturn in his IPL journey. His struggles were attributed to disciplinary issues and inconsistent performances in domestic cricket, which raised concerns about his fitness and form.
After transferring from Mumbai to Maharashtra this year, Shaw regained his confidence and consistency, leading him to re-enter the auction at the same base price of INR 75 lakh, eager to reclaim his spot in the IPL.
Heartbreak at the Auction
Following his unsold status in the previous auction, Shaw was hopeful for a comeback, especially after a strong domestic season. His name was among the first announced by auctioneer Mallika Sagar, but silence filled the room as franchises did not bid for him, leading to another 'UNSOLD' announcement, which shocked fans and cricket lovers alike.
In the accelerated round, when Sarfaraz Khan was picked up by the Chennai Super Kings for INR 75 lakh, expectations were high for Shaw. However, he remained unsold once again, prompting him to express his disappointment on Instagram with a simple message: 'It’s ok' accompanied by a heartbroken emoji.
A Second Chance from Delhi Capitals
Despite his earlier disappointment, the Delhi Capitals offered Shaw a lifeline. In the third round of the auction, they raised their paddle to secure him at his base price of INR 75 lakh, marking his long-awaited return to the IPL.
Following this acquisition, Shaw deleted his previous Instagram post and shared a new one expressing gratitude for the opportunity to return to his former team, stating, 'Back to my family.'
Looking Ahead
As he prepares for the upcoming IPL season, Prithvi Shaw aims to capitalize on this opportunity, impress the Delhi Capitals management, and re-establish himself as a vital player in the league. Throughout his IPL career, he has scored 1,892 runs, including 14 fifties, with an average of 23.95 across 79 matches.
