Prince Deep Singh: Rising Star in Indian Hockey's Goalkeeping Arena
A Remarkable Journey Begins
Despite not yet debuting in senior international hockey, Prince Deep Singh's ascent has been extraordinary. Currently part of the Senior Men's National Camp, this young goalkeeper has been nominated for two prestigious awards: the Hockey India Baljit Singh Award for Goalkeeper of the Year 2025 and the Hockey India Jugraj Singh Award for Upcoming Player of the Year 2025 (Men - Under 21). These accolades will be presented at the Hockey India 8th Annual Awards 2025, scheduled for March 27, 2026, in New Delhi. This recognition is both surreal and affirming for the 21-year-old, who made his international debut in 2024 with the Indian Junior Men's Hockey Team, earning multiple honors including a Gold medal at the FIH Junior Asia Cup 2024, a Silver at the Sultan of Johor Cup 2025, and a Bronze at the FIH Men's Junior World Cup Tamil Nadu 2025. Notably, he was also awarded 'Goalkeeper of the Tournament' during the Men's Hero Hockey India League (HIL) 2025-26 while playing for Accord Tamil Nadu Dragons.
Emotional Reflections
"I feel very happy and proud," Prince expressed with sincerity. "It usually takes time to be nominated for such awards, but I received this opportunity early. Performing well in tournaments and seeing my name among the top goalkeepers motivates me greatly."
A Journey Forged Under Pressure
Prince's path has been defined by his ability to perform under pressure. At the FIH Junior Men's World Cup 2025, where India secured Bronze, he excelled in critical moments, especially during the quarter-final against Belgium. "That match was do-or-die for us," he recalled. "We conceded late, leading to a shootout. My teammates encouraged me, saying, 'You have played well, you will do it.' Making early saves eased the pressure on the team, and the crowd's energy boosted my confidence."
From Football to Hockey
His remarkable journey began in Pathankot, where he initially played as a full-back at the Cheema Hockey Academy in Batala, balancing hockey with weekend football. It was during these football matches that his goalkeeping instincts emerged. "I used to play as a goalkeeper in football and made some impressive saves. My coaches noticed my height and reach and suggested I try goalkeeping in hockey. That's how it all began," he explained.
Mastering the Art of Goalkeeping
Today, Prince's instinct has transformed into a refined skill set that requires not only quick reflexes but also mental resilience. Goalkeeping is often regarded as one of the most mentally challenging roles in hockey, and he is still honing his craft. "There is always pressure from the crowd and the match situation," he noted. "I start my mental preparation a day in advance, focusing on rest, planning, and maintaining clarity. During the game, communication is crucial; the more I talk, the more I stay in control."
Learning from the Best
Gaining insights from senior players in the national setup has been vital in shaping his approach. One of his significant learning experiences was during the Sultan Johor Cup 2025, where he realized the importance of giving 100% for the team. "Playing against teams like Australia taught me the value of commitment in every moment," he shared.
A Bright Future Ahead
Although he has yet to earn his senior cap, Prince's nominations alongside established goalkeepers like Krishan Bahadur Pathak, Bichu Devi Kharibam, and Suraj Karkera highlight his potential and performance. "India has a strong pool of goalkeepers. Being nominated among them, even before my senior debut, feels special. It reassures me that I am on the right track," he stated.
Ambitions and Aspirations
This recognition has helped dispel self-doubt and ignite his ambition. "This clears a lot of doubts I had about myself. Now I know I'm doing something right. I just want to keep improving and build on this," he added. He emphasized the significance of platforms like the Hockey India Annual Awards, stating, "These awards are a tremendous source of motivation, especially for young players. Even being nominated is a significant achievement that inspires us to excel."
Dreaming Big
With clear aspirations for the future, Prince concluded by expressing his ultimate goal: to win an Olympic Gold medal. "My dream is to become the main goalkeeper for the Indian senior team and secure a Gold medal at the Olympics."
