Prasidh Krishna Makes History with Five-Wicket Haul at Chepauk
Prasidh Krishna Achieves Milestone at Chepauk
On Saturday, pacer Prasidh Krishna made history by recording the best bowling figures by an Indian pacer at Chennai's renowned Chepauk Stadium. He became the first Indian bowler to secure a five-wicket haul at this iconic venue during the third and final ODI against Afghanistan. Krishna was exceptional during the powerplay, claiming four wickets and ultimately dismissing centurion Hashmatullah Shahidi, finishing with impressive figures of 5/23.
His performance of 5/23 stands as the best by an Indian bowler at Chepauk, surpassing the previous record of 5/51 set by West Indies' Ravi Rampaul during the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and Pakistan's Aqib Javed's 5/61 against India in 1997. The only other Indian bowler to take four wickets in an ODI at Chennai was Ajit Agarkar, who achieved 4/34 against England in 2002.
Joining an Elite Group
With this achievement, Krishna joins the ranks of Mohammed Shami (who accomplished this against New Zealand in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023) and Manoj Prabhakar (who did so against Sri Lanka in Hyderabad in 1994) as the third Indian bowler to dismiss all top five opposition batters in an ODI match.
In his 25 ODIs, Krishna has taken 45 wickets, maintaining an average of 25.77 and an economy rate of 5.91. His record includes three four-wicket hauls and one five-wicket haul, with his best figures being 5/23.
Match Overview
In the match, Afghanistan won the toss and chose to bat first, but Krishna quickly put them on the back foot, reducing their score to 36/4 during the powerplay.
A partnership of 105 runs between Azmatullah Omarzai (50 runs off 56 balls, including five fours and two sixes) and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (102 runs off 131 balls, with 13 fours and one six) helped Afghanistan recover. Despite this, Indian bowlers continued to take wickets regularly, and although Shahidi reached his first ODI century, Afghanistan was eventually bowled out for 218 runs. Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, and Harsh Dubey each contributed with a wicket.
