Prashanti Singh Advocates for 3x3 Basketball's Role in India's Future
The Future of Indian Basketball: Insights from Prashanti Singh
New Delhi, December 29: Prashanti Singh, a Padma Shri awardee and former captain of the Indian basketball team, believes that the rapidly evolving 3x3 basketball format could significantly influence the future of the sport in India.
In her remarks about India's potential in basketball, Prashanti emphasized that the 3x3 format presents a viable opportunity for the nation to excel on a global stage.
“With the introduction of 3x3, we have a fantastic opportunity. Our athletes can excel in individual events within Olympic sports due to the accountability it fosters. Forming a team of four for 3x3 can lead to the creation of a strong squad. If we have a talent pool of 25 to 30 players domestically, we can produce world-class competitors. This format truly has the potential for us to succeed,” the Arjuna awardee stated.
She further noted, “This format represents the future of basketball globally, as it aligns with the growing trend for fast-paced and dynamic sports. Embracing this change is essential. This championship embodies that vision.”
Prashanti also highlighted the necessity for early adoption and increased participation to foster ongoing development in the sport.
“We need to embrace this format quickly and enhance its popularity. This will provide our players with greater exposure. The competition includes everyone from under-14s to seniors, creating a robust environment where juniors can learn from seniors, and vice versa,” she added.
Roopam Harish Sharma, Chairperson of the Organising Committee for the Harish Sharma 3x3 All India Basketball Championship, shared insights on the competitive nature of the event.
“This year, we have set the prize money at Rs 1 lakh for the first place, Rs 50,000 for the second, and Rs 30,000 for the third,” she mentioned.
