The Rise of Pickleball in the U.S.

Pickleball is experiencing a remarkable surge in popularity across the United States, attracting substantial corporate investments. This sport, which started as a casual pastime, has rapidly become one of the nation's fastest-growing athletic activities, capturing the attention of investors, media outlets, and brands eager to tap into its expanding fan base.

A significant boost to this momentum comes from a recent $225 million investment aimed at enhancing the professional and commercial aspects of pickleball. Spearheaded by Apollo Sports Capital, this funding will facilitate the establishment of Pickleball Inc., a new entity that will unify Major League Pickleball, the PPA Tour, and various associated businesses under one roof. This initiative will also encompass media, technology, e-commerce, and retail sectors linked to the sport's burgeoning market.

For organizers in East Naples, this development further solidifies the region's status as a global hub for pickleball. Ben Weinberger, the tournament director for the U.S. Open Pickleball Championships, remarked, “The integration of Major League Pickleball, the PPA Tour, and e-commerce assets with Pickleball Central signifies that investors recognize the potential for a vast audience.”

The National Pickleball Center in East Naples has emerged as one of the sport's most iconic venues, boasting 65 courts that operate year-round, making it the largest dedicated pickleball complex worldwide. This venue recently hosted the 10th U.S. Open Pickleball Championships, with demand soaring; over 7,000 players applied for around 3,500 spots this year. Weinberger stated, “It is the pickleball capital of the world for many reasons, and that’s not something you can fabricate.”

The sport's expansion is also changing perceptions about its players and cultural significance. Gabriella Crown, the founder of Kinda Proper Clothing, a pickleball apparel brand, initially viewed the sport as one for older adults. However, she soon discovered a younger, more competitive community. “I used to think it was a sport my grandparents would play,” Crown shared. “Now it’s attracting a younger audience and gaining global recognition.” After engaging with the sport's vibrant community, she launched her own pickleball clothing line.

While significant investments are flowing into professional circuits and commercial growth, organizers emphasize that recreational players are crucial to the sport's sustainable development. Weinberger noted, “We believe that the amateur tournament and recreational aspects will continue to fuel the sport's growth.”

This latest investment highlights the swift transformation of pickleball from a community-based recreational activity into a large-scale professional sport, with cities like Naples playing a pivotal role in this evolution as participation and business interest continue to rise across the United States.
