Significant Investment in Pickleball

Last week, pickleball experienced a remarkable boost in the United States with a substantial $225 million investment that led to the formation of Pickleball Inc. This new organization is set to oversee and enhance the professional development of the sport. The merger combines Major League Pickleball and the Carvana PPA Tour, two key players in the pickleball landscape, under one umbrella. Officials indicated that this consolidation aims to simplify the sport's growing ecosystem, which includes professional competitions, technology, retail, and infrastructure advancements.

As pickleball continues to gain traction both in the U.S. and internationally, a report from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association revealed that over 24 million individuals participated in the sport in 2025, reflecting a 22% increase from the previous year. Participation has skyrocketed by more than 171% over the last three years, solidifying its reputation as the fastest-growing sport in America.

Transitioning to a Mainstream Sport

MLP Commissioner Samin Odhwani characterized this investment as a pivotal moment for pickleball, stating, “Pickleball is no longer an emerging sport; it is rapidly evolving into a tier one sport in America.” Al Tylis, CEO of Apollo Sports Capital, shared this enthusiasm, noting the sport's broad appeal across various age groups and demographics. “Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports globally, attracting players and fans of all ages, and we are thrilled to be making this structured investment,” Tylis remarked.

Professional Landscape Transformation

The professional aspect of pickleball has also expanded significantly. Pickleball Inc. is set to feature over 150 professional players, with top athletes now able to earn upwards of $1 million annually through appearance fees, sponsorships, and prize money. The organization reports that players collectively receive more than $33 million in payouts, with the average annual salary around $260,000. However, many professional players still manage jobs alongside their competitive pursuits, highlighting the contrast between the sport's commercial success and the challenges faced by athletes striving for sustainable careers.

Additionally, the interest from celebrities has further propelled the sport's growth. Notable figures such as Tom Brady, Kim Clijsters, LeBron James, Kevin Love, and Draymond Green have invested in teams, enhancing the sport's visibility and financial backing. For pickleball, which was once seen merely as a recreational activity, this announcement signifies a crucial step towards establishing itself as a mainstream global sporting phenomenon.
