Pickleball's Surge in Popularity: Highlights from the Málaga Spanish Open
Málaga Spanish Open Showcases Pickleball's Growth
The popularity of pickleball is rapidly increasing across Europe, with Spain emerging as a key player in this trend. The sport, once seen as a niche pastime, is now drawing significant crowds, international athletes, and substantial investments in events. This growth was evident at the recent Málaga Spanish Open, where record numbers of participants and full courts showcased the sport's rising appeal in southern Spain.
This tournament, part of the Cervezas Victoria Pickle Pro Tour, marked its second return to Málaga and Torremolinos since the tour's inception in 2015. Organizers reported a remarkable 60% increase in player registrations compared to last year, with 470 competitors participating over the weekend.
A total of 691 matches were held across various singles and doubles categories, ranging from 3.5 to 4.5 levels, culminating in professional competitions. Most matches took place at the newly established Torremolinos Sports Village, which featured up to 25 courts, including semi-covered areas that allowed play to continue despite Saturday's rain.
The highlight of the event was in Málaga city at Plaza de la Marina, where a specially built center court attracted spectators and tourists alike. The venue was transformed into a vibrant entertainment hub with grandstands and VIP hospitality areas.
Among the standout performances was local player María Costantino, who ranked second nationally in women's singles and first in women's doubles on the Pickle Pro Tour. Although she narrowly missed achieving a triple crown, she did secure the mixed doubles title with partner Ignasi de Rueda, defeating Katie Morris and Mateusz Matysik in the final.
In the Women's Pro Singles, Great Britain's Katie Morris triumphed over Costantino, while Mauro García from Cádiz claimed the Men's Pro Singles title against De Rueda. The Women's Pro Doubles championship went to Marina Sicic and Karolina Owczarek, who edged out Sabrina Méndez and Costantino in a tightly contested match. In Men's Pro Doubles, Mateusz Matysik and Claudio Quiñones took home the gold after defeating Louis Laville and Ignasi de Rueda.
Additionally, the event marked a significant technological advancement for Spanish pickleball with the introduction of PickleVAR, a video review system used during the professional finals. Organizers hailed this system as a success, emphasizing the sport's rapid evolution in Europe as tournaments grow larger, more professional, and increasingly appealing to global audiences.
