Pickleball: A New Ramadan Tradition in Indonesia

In Indonesia, pickleball is becoming increasingly popular as a recreational activity during Ramadan. Sports officials are advocating for this game as a healthy way to pass the time while waiting for iftar. As reported by a local sports outlet, the Indonesian Pickleball Federation has recently promoted the idea of engaging in pickleball during 'ngabuburit', a cultural practice of waiting for the fast to conclude.

Harlin Rahardjo, the deputy chairman of PB IPF, shared that this initiative aims to blend sports, social interaction, and a healthy lifestyle throughout the fasting month. During a media event at the VATA Courts Pickleball venue in Kemang, South Jakarta, he elaborated on how pickleball is particularly well-suited for light activity before iftar. 'This year, we are introducing a new tradition of playing pickleball while waiting to break the fast,' Harlin stated.

He emphasized the importance of familiarizing people with the game's rules and the enjoyment it brings. Harlin pointed out that the sport's relatively low physical demands make it an excellent choice during fasting hours. 'Pickleball is ideal for ngabuburit because it is not overly strenuous and does not deplete your energy. The movements are gentle yet keep you active and healthy,' he explained.

Moreover, he mentioned that engaging in moderate exercise before iftar can assist in burning fat reserves and maintaining fitness levels throughout Ramadan. Harlin also warned against completely halting physical activity during this month, asserting that pickleball provides a balanced option that supports both health and religious practices. This initiative is part of a larger effort by PB IPF to raise awareness of pickleball in Indonesia as the sport continues to grow in popularity across Asia.
