A Life-Saving Moment in Pickleball

Pickleball, one of the fastest-growing sports globally, has once again demonstrated its compassionate side. The sport not only promotes mental well-being but also actively supports medical causes, fostering a robust community spirit. In March 2026, this community became a lifesaver when members at a US club sprang into action to revive a player who suffered a heart attack.

Bill Porter, a resident of Rancho Santa Fe, collapsed in his vehicle after a game in California. Fellow pickleball enthusiasts quickly rushed to his aid, utilizing their medical knowledge and teamwork to save his life. Among the responders were Muffy Walker, a nurse, and Andy Chang, a retired doctor, who promptly evaluated the situation.

After breaking into Porter's locked car, they initiated emergency procedures. They employed an automated external defibrillator (AED) and performed CPR continuously until emergency services arrived. Despite having no pulse for several minutes, the group's efforts kept him alive until paramedics took over. Doctors later credited the timely CPR as crucial to his survival.

Reflecting on the incident, Porter remarked, “If I had been on the street, I wouldn’t have made it,” emphasizing the importance of having people ready to act in emergencies.

Weeks later, on March 20, Porter returned to the same club to express his gratitude to the pickleball community that played a pivotal role in saving his life. Now fully recovered, he is back on the court, showcasing not only the sport's increasing popularity but also the strong bonds it creates among players.

This incident highlights that pickleball is more than just a recreational sport; it cultivates close-knit communities where members support one another, sometimes even saving lives.
