Pat Cummins Advocates for Hosting World Test Championship Final at Lord's
Cummins Supports Lord's as Venue for WTC Final
Pat Cummins, the captain of the Australian Test cricket team, has expressed his belief that the reigning champions should have the opportunity to host the World Test Championship final. Australia, the defending champions, is scheduled to compete against South Africa, captained by Temba Bavuma, on June 11 at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground. Both team leaders participated in the traditional photoshoot ahead of the match.
In a press conference, Cummins acknowledged the importance of Lord's in the realm of Test cricket. He suggested that if logistical considerations allow, the previous year's champions could be granted the honor of hosting the final. Cummins remarked,
"Logistically, it seems like that's probably the easiest way to have one venue. It'd be nice, maybe the previous winner hosts that for the next time, or something like that. But as an alternative, I think having it at Lord's every cycle is also a pretty good place."
Earlier reports indicated that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating the possibility of hosting the final.
Cummins Reflects on ODI World Cup Success
Despite securing the World Test mace in 2023, Cummins believes that winning the ODI World Cup that same year holds a more significant place in his heart. Australia reached the final after a remarkable victory against India in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, followed by a win over Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series. Cummins stated,
"The last four years or so have been hugely successful for this group and it's (been) such a great chunk of our careers for players and staff. Having two maces is a really significant thing to show for that period of time – we feel like we have been the best team in the world across all different conditions and to hold the mace at the end of that would be a great sign of something to point to now but also down the track. The ODI World Cup of 2023 is going to be hard to top, that's number one for me."
Cummins further elaborated,
"But I do believe the (World Test Championship) mace is just below that in terms of you're up against every other team in the world and you've been successful for a couple of years to make the final, so the mace means a lot."
