Nishio, Sep 29: Indian boxer Parveen Hooda has secured her place in the women's 65kg final at the Asian Games, achieving a convincing 5-0 victory against China's Li Shu at the Nishio Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Hooda showcased her skills throughout the match, particularly excelling in the final two rounds. She narrowly won the first round with a score of 3-2, effectively landing counter punches while maintaining a strategic approach.
In the second round, Hooda dominated, landing numerous hits, while her opponent also managed to score some punches. Nevertheless, she won this round decisively with a score of 5-0. The third round saw Hooda continue her superior performance, landing precise punches to again win 5-0. All five judges favored her, with three scoring it 29-28 and two giving a score of 30-27.
With this victory, Hooda advances to the final, where she is set to face a formidable opponent in Chen Nien-chin from Chinese Taipei, who is a reigning Olympic and world bronze medalist, as well as a bronze medalist from the 2023 Asian Games.
Additionally, Indian boxers Ankush Panghal and Narender are also competing in their semifinals on Tuesday, aiming to reach the finals.
India has already secured six boxing medals at the ongoing Aichi-Nagoya Games, with all three boxers who competed on Monday winning their matches. Kapil Pokhariya, Priya Ghanghas, and Lovlina Borgohain each triumphed in their respective bouts.
Priya guaranteed herself a medal in the women's 60kg category after a unanimous 5-0 victory over Tajikistan's Mijgona Samadova in the quarterfinals. Earlier, Lovlina also confirmed her medal with a strong 5-0 win in the women's 75kg quarterfinal against Korea's Seong Suyeon.
On Sunday, India secured three medals as Ankush, Parveen, and Narender won their quarterfinal matches.
Ankush, the reigning Commonwealth Games champion, ensured India's first boxing medal at these Games by defeating Tajikistan's Nekruz Salimov in the men's 80kg quarterfinals with a unanimous 5-0 decision.
Parveen also clinched a medal in the women's 65kg category after a 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan's Navbakhor Khamidova in the quarterfinals.
Later, Narender also secured a medal with a quarterfinal win against Thailand's Adthapong Saengtep in the Men's +90kg category.
