Dispute Over Pickleball Courts at Four Seasons Resort

A conflict regarding the installation of pickleball courts at the Four Seasons Resort in Palm Beach has resulted in fines and a demolition order, underscoring the town's rigorous enforcement of regulations. As reported, the resort transformed a clay tennis court into two pickleball courts without securing the necessary permits, leading to action from local authorities.

During a development-review meeting on April 15, the Town Council denied the resort's request for retroactive approval of the courts. The following day, the Code Enforcement Board imposed a daily fine of $250, which will continue until the tennis court is restored to its original state.

Council member Ted Cooney expressed frustration, questioning, “Why can't the Four Seasons understand that they need permissions from the town of Palm Beach?” He noted that this issue seems to be a recurring problem with the resort.

Maura Ziska, the resort's attorney, acknowledged the oversight but insisted it was unintentional. She stated that the resort did not act in bad faith, despite the lack of permits for the construction.

The resort's engineering director explained that they believed no permit was necessary since there were no alterations to the hardscaping or landscaping, admitting the mistake and offering an apology. However, council members remained unconvinced, especially in light of complaints from local residents regarding noise from the pickleball activities.

This situation illustrates Palm Beach's stringent regulatory framework, where even minor changes are closely monitored. The authorities have previously taken similar actions against unauthorized sports facilities, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy. The council's ruling sends a strong message as pickleball's popularity rises: adherence to local regulations is essential, with no exceptions allowed.
