Pakistan's Captain Salman Agha Addresses T20 World Cup Boycott Against India
Pakistan's Stance on T20 World Cup Match Against India
Colombo: Pakistan's cricket captain, Salman Ali Agha, reiterated on Thursday that the decision to withdraw from the T20 World Cup match against India was made by the government and is beyond their control.
On Sunday, Pakistan declared its intention to boycott the highly anticipated T20 World Cup group match against India scheduled for February 15. Nevertheless, the government has permitted the national team to participate in the remaining matches of the tournament starting February 7.
"The match against India is not something we can control. It is a decision made by the government and the PCB, and we respect that. We will follow whatever instructions they provide," Agha stated during a press briefing.
The T20 tournament is set to commence across various venues in India and Sri Lanka on Saturday.
Agha mentioned that if the two rival teams meet again in the knockout stages, they will adhere to the government's directives.
"Should we face them in the semifinal or final, we will consult with them and follow their guidance," he added.
Pakistan's decision, communicated through an official statement, serves as a political protest against the exclusion of Bangladesh from the tournament. The ICC had denied Bangladesh's request to relocate matches from India to Sri Lanka due to security concerns.
During the press conference, Agha was reminded of Pakistan's surprising defeat to the USA in the previous tournament held in the Americas.
"Indeed, we lost to the USA in the last World Cup, but that is now behind us. This is a new World Cup, with a new team and fresh dynamics, and we are eager to compete," he remarked.
"This is my first World Cup as captain, and I am thrilled about it. I find it hard to express my feelings as a captain. My goal is to lead effectively, maximize the team's potential, and create an environment where they can excel," Agha concluded.
