Ustari's Stellar Performance

In a surprising turn of events, it was not Lionel Messi but goalkeeper Oscar Ustari who emerged as the standout player for Inter Miami during their opening match in the Club World Cup. Ustari showcased his skills by making eight crucial saves, including a penalty stop and a remarkable goal-line clearance, as Miami faced Egypt's Al Ahly in a goalless draw in Group A.

Among his impressive saves, Ustari's denial of a header in the 33rd minute was particularly noteworthy, second only to his penalty save against Trezeguet just before halftime, ensuring that Al Ahly's forward could not capitalize on the rebound.

At 38 years old, Ustari made his return to the World Cup stage in this newly formatted Club World Cup, marking his first appearance since he won the U-20 World Cup in 2005 alongside Messi, who now captains Inter Miami.

Prior to his time with Inter Miami, Ustari captained CF Pachuca, which also participated in the tournament. However, his previous club faced controversy due to Grupo Pachuca's ownership of Club León, which was disqualified by FIFA, and their appeal was denied by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Ustari has a rich history, having made 124 appearances for the "Tuzos" before a brief stint with Audax Italiano in Chile's top division. He joined Inter Miami as a free agent in September 2024 and has since played 22 matches, including eight in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

Ustari's Reflections

When asked about his performance, Ustari humbly stated, "I prefer not to focus on myself. The team's defensive effort was outstanding, and that is what matters most to me."

"I remember my retirement and knew that my return would eventually happen on the pitch, so I am thrilled to be back," he added.

"I felt we were the better team; that's my perspective. The match left me with positive feelings, but our next opponent will present a different challenge."

Luis Suarez's Take

Inter Miami forward Luis Suarez commented on Ustari's performance, saying, "We didn't anticipate that their goalkeeper would make so many saves; he was pivotal in the game, especially in the first half. This illustrates how goalkeepers can be crucial in securing points."
