World No. 3 and Serbian tennis sensation Novak Djokovic faced a challenging second-round match at the French Open 2026, where he encountered local player Valentin Royer and a fervent crowd on Court Philippe-Chatrier on May 27.

Djokovic kept his quest for a 25th Grand Slam title alive by defeating Royer in four sets, securing his place in the third round of the men's singles. The 24-time Grand Slam champion dominated the initial two sets, winning 6-3, 6-2, but Royer fought back, taking the third set 7-6, preventing Djokovic from a straight-sets victory.

Nevertheless, Djokovic quickly regained his composure, clinching the fourth set 6-3 to finish the match, marking his 103rd win at the French Open and further solidifying his legendary status in Paris.

Tensions Rise with the Paris Crowd

During his match against Royer, Djokovic faced significant hostility from a segment of the crowd, who were vocally supporting the French player. The atmosphere grew increasingly charged, with spectators booing Djokovic and disrupting his service routines.

Tensions escalated when Royer celebrated a net-cord winner, prompting Djokovic to express his displeasure. The chair umpire, Renaud Lichtenstein, intervened, urging the audience to show respect for both competitors.

Djokovic, however, did not hold back his feelings, responding, "They have no respect. No respect." This incident added to the narrative of Djokovic's complex relationship with certain crowds throughout his career.

Djokovic's Frustration with French Players

After his victory, Djokovic expressed his frustration regarding the crowd's reception during an on-court interview, stating his desire to avoid facing any more French players in the tournament.

"I hope I won’t play any more French players for the rest of the tournament," he remarked, acknowledging the difficulties he faced from the outset of the match.

Next, Djokovic is set to compete against 28th seed Joao Fonseca from Brazil. The Serbian star is pursuing a historic 25th Grand Slam title, having last won his 24th at the 2023 US Open against Daniil Medvedev.
