Novak Djokovic Advances in French Open, Sets New Grand Slam Record
Djokovic's Comeback Victory
Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, faced a tough challenge in his opening match at the French Open, ultimately overcoming local player Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The match concluded with Djokovic winning 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-4, allowing him to progress to the second round. This victory also marked his record-breaking 82nd appearance in the men's singles main draw at Grand Slam events, surpassing the previous record held by Roger Federer.
Record-Breaking Performance
With this win, Djokovic improved his first-round record to 80 victories against just two defeats, with his last first-round loss occurring at the 2006 Australian Open, according to the ATP's official website.
A Tough Start
In their first-ever ATP matchup, Djokovic encountered difficulties against the Frenchman's serve, which disrupted his rhythm. Giovanni received strong support from the crowd and successfully defended nine break points in the second set before Djokovic capitalized on his tenth opportunity to equalize the match.
"I had no chances on his serve in the first set," Djokovic remarked, acknowledging the impressive precision and speed of Giovanni's serve. Once Djokovic broke through, he adapted to Giovanni's game and secured the victory in two hours and 51 minutes, marking his 102nd win at the French Open.
Djokovic Discusses Preparation and Injury
"Entering Roland Garros with just one match on clay is not ideal," Djokovic admitted, noting that this was only his second clay tournament of the season. "That wasn't part of the plan, but I had to accept the situation due to my injury. I prepared myself for Paris and aimed to give my best effort," he added.
Looking Ahead
This marks Djokovic's 22nd consecutive appearance at the French Open. He is set to face Valentin Royer in the next round, who recently defeated Hugo Dellien with a score of 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in just under two hours.
