NorthEast United FC Triumphs Over Diamond Harbour FC 6-1 in Durand Cup Final
Dominant Performance by NorthEast United
In a stunning display, NorthEast United FC secured a decisive 6-1 victory against Diamond Harbour FC in the Durand Cup final held at Salt Lake Stadium on Saturday, successfully defending their title. The Highlanders took a commanding 2-0 lead by halftime and continued their offensive onslaught in the second half, achieving the largest margin of victory in a Durand Cup final since Independence.
A Goal-Scoring Extravaganza
Asheer Akhtar initiated the scoring at the 30-minute mark, followed by Parthib Gogoi, who extended the lead just before halftime. The second half saw contributions from Thoi Singh, substitute Jairo Samperio, Andres Rodriguez, and Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who scored from the penalty spot, culminating in a historic win. Diamond Harbour managed to score a consolation goal through Luka Majcen midway through the second half.
Diamond Harbour's Journey Comes to an End
Diamond Harbour FC had an impressive journey to the final, having eliminated prominent teams like Jamshedpur FC and East Bengal. However, they struggled to replicate that form in the championship match. NorthEast United showcased their dominance from the outset, combining solid defense with effective midfield play and lethal finishing.
Back-to-Back Champions
Having triumphed over Mohun Bagan Super Giant in last year's final via penalties, the Highlanders improved upon their previous performance with this emphatic win. With this victory, NorthEast United becomes only the second team, after East Bengal (1989–1991), to successfully defend the Durand Cup title in the post-Independence era.
