Nitish Kumar Reddy Shines in Comeback Match Against Afghanistan
Reddy's Remarkable Comeback
Following an impressive bowling performance, Indian all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy shared insights about his rehabilitation journey at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Despite facing injuries and inconsistent performances, he maintained a positive outlook. Reddy is now eager to build on the confidence he gained from taking three wickets against Afghanistan in the second T20I.
Reddy's Triumphant Return
After enduring months of rehabilitation due to injuries that sidelined him post a promising Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Nitish provided a significant boost to India's pace-bowling all-rounder lineup. He achieved figures of 3/24 against Afghanistan at Arun Jaitley Stadium, helping India secure the series. In 13 matches, he scored 302 runs, including a fifty, and took eight wickets during the 2026 season. Unfortunately, a quadriceps injury during the Afghanistan ODIs prevented him from participating in T20Is against Ireland, England, and Zimbabwe. As a backup to star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, the 23-year-old missed valuable opportunities to refine his bowling skills. However, in the second T20I against Afghanistan, he claimed crucial wickets of Ibrahim Zadran, Gulbadin Naib, and Rashid Khan, alleviating some pressure with his impressive 3/24 in three overs.
'Stay Mentally Positive'
In a video shared by the BCCI, Nitish, who struggled in the first T20I, emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset. He expressed gratitude for what could be a pivotal bowling performance in his career and appreciated the support from the team management. "You just have to be mentally positive and focus on doing the right things; God will reward you in due time. It feels great; every player needs confidence after an injury. The first game was challenging for me, but I felt much better in the second match. Confidence is crucial, and I hope to carry this forward," Nitish stated. He acknowledged the privilege of being part of the Indian team and the trust shown by the management.
On Rehabilitation and Mental Challenges
Reflecting on his time at the Centre of Excellence, which has seen numerous players come and go due to injuries, Nitish admitted that the experience was mentally exhausting. However, conversations with family and friends, along with brief visits home, provided him with essential relaxation. "It can be mentally draining at CoE. While the facilities are excellent for training and improving skills, I found solace in talking to friends and family and taking short breaks at home. It's vital to prioritize mental well-being," he explained. Nitish noted that the demanding nature of being an all-rounder increases his injury risk, necessitating careful management of his workload and recovery. "Injuries can be disheartening, but it's all about mindset. You must remain strong and avoid negative influences during tough times. Staying mentally positive and focusing on the right actions is key," he concluded.
