Nine Transgender Students Triumph in Odisha's Class-X Exams Against All Odds

Remarkable Achievement in Bhadrak
Bhadrak: In a groundbreaking achievement, nine transgender students from Sarojini Sanskruta Vidyalaya in Boualpokhari, located in Odisha's Bhadrak district, have successfully passed their Class-X board examinations.
The group, which includes two lesbian students, has defied societal expectations and stigma, as highlighted by the school's headmaster, Malayranjan Panda.
The students—Riya Sahi, Jitu Swain, Jadunatha Hansda, Sanjana Samal, Sasmita Bindhani, Ashirbad Sahoo, Rajkishor Das, Sima Tangur, and Sandhya Champia—have not only achieved academic success but have also marked a significant personal victory, having previously faced rejection from their families.
With the announcement of the Class-X results, the atmosphere has shifted positively for these students. They have begun receiving phone calls, blessings, and encouragement from relatives who had distanced themselves in the past, according to Panda.
Riya Sahu shared her experience, stating, "I have been away from my home in Khallikote, Ganjam district for the past five years. Like me, the others have traveled from different regions of Odisha. We live in a rented accommodation close to the school. Despite facing humiliation and societal stigma, our determination and the support from the school enabled us to pass the matriculation exam."
When asked about her future, Riya expressed, "I aspire to continue my education and live with dignity."
The All Odisha Transgender Welfare Association has extended heartfelt congratulations to the students for their outstanding accomplishment.
Other students echoed similar sentiments. Ashribad Sahu remarked, "People doubted our abilities based on our physical appearance. However, we have proven them wrong. I aim to further my studies and secure a government job for a brighter future."
Many of these students had previously been compelled to beg or perform on the streets for survival. They overcame numerous challenges, rented rooms near the school, and dedicated themselves to their studies. Their success demonstrates that with the right opportunities and support, they can achieve remarkable things, stated Sommya Das, president of the Bhadrak Transgender Surakshya Samiti.
Soumya also recognized the contributions of local NGOs and the government's transgender welfare fund in facilitating the students' education.
Some students had to repeat Class-IX due to personal difficulties, but they persevered. The special attention and mentorship they received helped them regain their confidence, Soumya added.
