Nilesh Desai Aims for Pickleball World Cup Glory After Recent Victory
Nilesh Desai's Ambition for the Pickleball World Cup
After clinching the 50+ Men's Singles title at the Picklebay Zonals - North, seasoned pickleball athlete Nilesh Desai is eager to make another appearance at the Pickleball World Cup. He aims to demonstrate that his previous achievements on the global stage were not mere coincidences.
The upcoming PWR 700 tournament, sanctioned by the Indian Pickleball Association at Horizon X Courtplay, holds special significance as it serves as the senior selection trials for the World Cup, set to take place in Da Nang from August 30 to September 6. With spots on the Indian team at stake, Desai emphasizes that consistency has been crucial in maintaining his position among the top players in the 50+ category.
"I dedicate at least three hours daily to both tennis and pickleball. I also prioritize playing with younger athletes, as they help me stay agile," Desai shared in a conversation with Pickleball Now.
Instead of confining himself to competitors within his age group, Desai prefers the challenge of younger opponents to enhance his skills. "Playing only against peers can sometimes lower the intensity. Competing with younger players keeps me motivated and pushes me to improve constantly," he explained.
Desai has observed significant changes in the 50+ division since he began playing. "When I started, the competition level in the 50+ category was not as high. Few players participated in singles, as most opted for doubles," he noted.
He believes the standard has dramatically improved over the last two years. "Recently, many new players have entered this category, and the overall quality of play has seen a remarkable rise. Competitors are now more aggressive, agile, and possess a comprehensive skill set necessary for success in pickleball," he added.
With the World Cup approaching, Desai reiterated that representing India again is his primary motivation. "Absolutely. I am eager to prove that my past achievements were not just a fluke," he stated. "I have been there before, and I am determined to earn my spot once more."
The Picklebay Zonals - North has drawn some of India's top players across 28 categories, with World Cup selection adding extra weight to each outcome. For Desai, winning in Gurgaon is a crucial step toward returning to the international arena, where he aspires to don the Indian colors once again.
