Neymar Jr. Shares Emotional Journey to FIFA World Cup Selection
Neymar's Emotional Reaction to World Cup Call-Up
Brasilia [Brazil], May 20: Brazilian football sensation Neymar Jr. has expressed his heartfelt emotions following his selection for the FIFA World Cup squad, revealing that he was in tears for several hours upon receiving the news.
During a conversation with his teammates and club staff at Santos, Neymar shared, as reported by ESPN, that this call-up symbolizes the end of a challenging journey and he expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him along the way.
“It’s hard to put into words the feelings I’ve experienced. I want to extend my thanks to everyone here. This selection isn’t just for me; it’s for all those who have been part of this journey, whether on the field or off, ensuring our safety, fitness, and nutrition. I admit I cried for several hours because reaching this point was no easy feat,” Neymar stated.
Brazil holds the record for the most FIFA World Cup victories, having claimed the title five times (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002), yet they have not won the trophy in 24 years.
Neymar emphasized that this recognition made all his sacrifices worthwhile. “Those who have stood by me know how tough it has been. But hearing my name on the list made all the sacrifices and efforts feel justified,” he added.
Fans of Brazil celebrated Neymar’s inclusion, and he took a moment to acknowledge their unwavering support during his speech.
“Thank you for your belief in me,” he expressed. “I’m here to show my appreciation for your support throughout my career. We are united as Brazil aims for a sixth World Cup title.”
Earlier, Brazil's head coach Carlo Ancelotti revealed a 26-player roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Neymar set to represent the five-time champions. The tournament is scheduled to take place in the US, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
Neymar’s selection comes after much speculation regarding his inclusion, especially after he was left out of the squad for the March friendlies. The 34-year-old forward had not played for Brazil since 2023 but has consistently expressed his eagerness to participate in the tournament, despite battling recurring hamstring and knee injuries over the past year.
