New Zealand Triumphs Over Bangladesh in First ODI Match
New Zealand Sets a Target of 248 Runs
In the opening ODI of the bilateral series at Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka, New Zealand secured a 26-run victory against Bangladesh. Choosing to bat first, the Kiwi team, led by Tom Latham, faced an early setback as Nick Kelly was dismissed in the seventh over, scoring just seven runs off 23 balls with one boundary.
Henry Nicholls formed a solid partnership, contributing 73 runs alongside Will Young. However, Rishad Hossain ended their collaboration in the 22nd over. Young managed to score 30 runs from 42 balls, hitting a couple of boundaries.
Captain Latham added 33 runs with Nicholls before being bowled by Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 14 runs. Youngster Muhammad Abbas came in next, adding 14 runs to the total.
Nicholls was looking strong at 68 when Hossain dismissed him. He struck nine fours in his innings of 83 balls. Dean Foxcroft then accelerated the scoring, reaching a half-century with help from the tailenders, pushing the total past 240 runs. Nathan Smith contributed an unbeaten 21 runs, setting a target of 248 runs for Bangladesh.
Hossain, Shoriful Islam, and Taskin Ahmed each took two wickets, while Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed one wicket apiece.
Bangladesh Struggles in the Chase
In pursuit of the 248-run target, Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan Tamim opened the batting for Bangladesh. They started off well until Nathan Smith struck, dismissing Tamim on the first ball of the fourth over for just two runs. Smith followed up by bowling Najmul Hossain Shanto on the next delivery, delivering a double blow to the home team.
Litton Das scored 46 runs off 68 balls, forming a 93-run partnership for the third wicket with Hassan before Dean Foxcroft broke that stand by bowling Das. Saif Hassan reached his half-century but was dismissed shortly after, making 57 runs off 76 balls, including eight fours and a six.
Towhid Hridoy, who scored 55 runs off 60 balls, added 52 runs with Afif Hossain before Jayden Lennox ended their partnership in the 41st over. Captain Miraz lost his wicket soon after, leaving Hridoy to carry the team's hopes.
Despite needing a run-a-ball to win, Bangladesh lost too many wickets during the middle overs. Hridoy fought hard but ultimately, Bangladesh was all out for 221 runs, losing the match by 26 runs. They now trail 0-1 in the three-match ODI series.
Foxcroft's Stellar Performance Leads NZ to Victory
Blair Tickner was the standout bowler for New Zealand, taking four wickets, while Nathan Smith claimed three. Dean Foxcroft was awarded Player of the Match for his impressive all-round performance. The second match of the series is scheduled to take place at the same venue on Monday.
