New Sports Bill Introduced in Lok Sabha to Regulate International Participation
Introduction of the National Sports Administration Bill
On Wednesday, the Lok Sabha saw the introduction of the National Sports Administration Bill. This legislation grants the central government the authority to impose restrictions on the international participation of Indian teams and individual athletes under extraordinary circumstances.
Key Provisions of the Bill
The sports bill includes provisions that allow for directives to be issued in the national interest, clarifying the participation of Indian teams and athletes on the international stage. Issues regarding athletes' participation frequently arise in relation to Pakistan.
Government's Authority Under the Bill
According to the bill, the central government can, under extraordinary circumstances and in the national interest, issue an order to restrict the participation of a national team in international sports competitions or an individual's involvement in national sports activities. This legislation will become an act only after being passed by both houses of Parliament and receiving presidential assent. The question of allowing an Indian team to participate in an international competition often arises when Pakistan is involved.
Government's Policy on Participation
The government's stance on participation in various competitions has been quite clear in recent years. If a competition involves multiple countries, there are no restrictions on participation; however, bilateral events with Pakistan are not considered.
