New Jersey 5s Make Strategic Trade
The New Jersey 5s, a leading team in Major League Pickleball (MLP), made a significant move on the last day of the trade window by acquiring Federico Staksrud and Milan Rane from the Orlando Squeeze on July 20. In exchange, Orlando received Martin Emmrich and Lina Padegimaite, along with an undisclosed cash payment. According to MLP regulations, teams can allocate up to $200,000 per player in cash considerations, suggesting this deal could be valued at around $400,000. This acquisition is expected to enhance the New Jersey 5s' chances as they prepare for the finals set for August 28-30 in New York.
Currently, the New Jersey 5s are tied for the top position in the MLP standings with the St. Louis Shock. However, St. Louis has recently gained an advantage after defeating New Jersey at the Mid-Season Tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan, leading the head-to-head series 2-1 this season. New Jersey will have one last chance to surpass St. Louis at MLP Orlando, scheduled from July 30 to August 2. St. Louis will be in a different pool, which could lead to another matchup if both teams reach the finals before the playoffs commence.
Selection Dilemmas Ahead
The addition of Staksrud raises interesting selection challenges for the New Jersey 5s. The team now features three top male players: Staksrud, Noe Khlif, and Will Howells, but the pairings for men's and mixed doubles remain uncertain. General manager Ryan Harwood did not disclose specific lineup plans but emphasized the rationale behind the acquisition. "We never felt we HAD to make a move as we've shown we are capable of beating anyone when playing well. However, if you have a chance to acquire players like Fed and Milly, you must take it seriously," Harwood stated.
He also highlighted the importance of retaining both Will and Noe, recognizing their exceptional skills as vital to the team's success. This season, Khlif and Anna Leigh Waters have been New Jersey's most reliable duo, achieving a 23-3 record in mixed doubles, while Will Howells and Jorja Johnson have a 15-6 record. However, men's doubles has been a weaker area for the 5s, with Khlif and Howells holding a 14-12 record, which they hope to improve with Staksrud's arrival. Harwood expressed confidence in both players despite their inconsistent performances, encouraging them to focus on their efforts and attitudes as they navigate the pressures of being on a top team.
