New Jersey 5s' Remarkable Journey

In a historic moment for Major League Pickleball (MLP), the New Jersey 5s have found their winning form. After finishing as runners-up in 2024 and 2025 against the Dallas Flash and Columbus Sliders, they returned with renewed determination for the 2026 season. The team has achieved an impressive three consecutive victories at MLP Austin, MLP Columbus, and MLP New York, making them the only team to accomplish this feat this season. Currently, they lead the standings with 87 points, four points ahead of the St. Louis Shock, as they prepare for the MLP Mid-Season event in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

With the MLP 2026 Final set for August 28-30, the New Jersey 5s, featuring standout players Anna Leigh Waters, Jorja Johnson, Will Howells, and Noe Khlif, are in a strong position to finally secure their first title. As they head into the Mid-Season on July 8, they are determined to maintain their momentum and continue their pursuit of the championship.

Challenges Ahead

Despite their impressive performance, the New Jersey 5s must remain vigilant. They are only four points ahead of the St. Louis Shock, who boast a formidable lineup including Anna Bright, Gabriel Tardio, Hayden Patriquin, Hunter Johnson, and Kate Fahey. This makes them the primary threat in the race for the MLP title.

Recent events have highlighted potential vulnerabilities. At MLP New York, the Texas Ranchers handed the New Jersey 5s their first loss after a remarkable 15-match unbeaten streak, narrowly defeating them 21-19 in a tense DreamBreaker. Although the 5s went on to win the New York series, this defeat serves as a reminder that even the strongest teams can falter under pressure.

As the league progresses over the next 100 days, challenges are expected. Other teams will be keenly observing the New Jersey 5s for any weaknesses, believing they can disrupt the leaders' rhythm and create similar upsets. For the New Jersey 5s, maintaining their momentum will be as crucial as achieving it. To finally lift the MLP trophy, they must demonstrate their ability to face these challenges head-on and maintain their dominance when it counts the most.
