Netherlands Players Face Online Abuse After World Cup Penalty Shootout Loss
Racist Abuse Targeting Dutch Players
Guadalupe [Mexico], July 1: Following their penalty shootout loss to Morocco in the World Cup, Dutch players who missed their shots have been subjected to racist and hateful comments online, as reported by the Dutch football association (KNVB) on Tuesday.
Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville all failed to convert their penalties, leading to Morocco's 3-2 victory after the match ended 1-1 post extra time, according to the KNVB.
“This is unacceptable, and we will be reporting this to 'Meld Online Discriminatie' (Report Online Discrimination),” the KNVB stated.
“Once a report is submitted, our legal team will evaluate whether the comments are legally actionable. This could result in a formal complaint to the Public Prosecution Service, which may initiate a criminal investigation,” they added.
“Football unites millions of people, while discrimination does the opposite. This contradicts the very essence of what football represents,” the KNVB emphasized.
Morocco kept their FIFA World Cup 2026 aspirations alive with a dramatic 3-2 win in the penalty shootout against the Netherlands after a tightly contested match that ended 1-1 after extra time.
This encounter was one of the standout matches of the Round of 32, with Morocco ranked sixth and the Netherlands seventh in the FIFA World Rankings. It was also the second match of the tournament to be decided by penalties, following Paraguay's earlier elimination of Germany.
Morocco is set to face Canada in their first Round of 16 match at NRG Stadium on Saturday as they continue their remarkable journey in the FIFA World Cup.
