Neeraj Chopra Honored at Indian Athletics Awards

Renowned Indian javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra was awarded the title of 'Best Male Athlete of the Year 2025' during the first-ever Indian Athletics Awards ceremony held on Saturday. After securing a silver medal in Paris, following his gold medal triumph at the Tokyo Olympics, Chopra expressed that this recognition holds special significance for him, especially as it was presented in front of athletes from various generations. "Yeh award dil ke nazdik hai (This award is very close to my heart). I am thrilled to receive this honor in the presence of both old and new athletes," Chopra remarked, having arrived from Doha earlier that day.

Chopra participated in the Doha Diamond League on Friday night, where he recorded a best throw of 85.69 meters on his third attempt, finishing fourth in his season debut. The celebrated javelin thrower has been on the mend from a back injury sustained before the September 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. After finishing eighth at the World Championships, he made his return at the Doha event. Since May 25, he has been training in Switzerland following a rehabilitation period in Turkiye. Notably, Chopra easily exceeded the 82.61-meter qualifying standard set by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) for the upcoming Commonwealth Games. With a stellar 2025 season behind him, he is poised to be India's top medal contender at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow this July and August, as well as at the Asian Games in Japan in September and October.


Chopra's Achievements and Future Prospects

Chopra's impressive season included victories at the NC Classic in Bengaluru and leading the standings in the Paris Diamond League, where he also achieved a personal best throw of 90.23 meters, surpassing the coveted 90-meter mark for the first time at the Doha Diamond League.

Parul Chaudhary, the national record holder in the 3000m steeplechase, was awarded the Best Female Athlete of the Year. Additionally, the esteemed sprinter and president of the Indian Olympic Association, P T Usha, received the Lifetime Achievement Award. The AFI initiated the Indian Athletics Awards to acknowledge the contributions of athletes, coaches, technical officials, mentors, state associations, and other stakeholders in advancing the sport. The inaugural ceremony featured ten categories, including Best Male and Female Athlete, Best Coach, Best Technical Official, Best State Association, and the Lifetime Achievement Award.
